Thomson Reuters Transforms Legal Landscape with AI Integration in Westlaw and Practical Law

In the ongoing discourse regarding the integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) into legal professions, Thomson Reuters has maintained a steady presence. The company’s AI strategies were most effectively manifested in June when it acquired Casetext, a legal research and AI corporation, and the CoCounsel generative AI mechanism that the company had developed in partnership with OpenAI.

Thomson Reuters had promised to incorporate this generative AI into its hallmark legal research platform. It made good on that promise in November when it launched AI Assisted Research within Westlaw Precision. Shortly after, a similar generative AI scheme was rolled out in Practical Law, its legal know-how product.

What does this suggest for the landscape of legal research and legal software, presently, and in the future? A recent episode of LawNext, where they discussed the development of AI Assisted Research in Westlaw Precision, the company’s wider AI product strategy, its acquisition of CoCounsel, its strategy to prevent hallucinations and ensure security, and the future of AI at Thomson Reuters and more generally, could provide us with some pointers.
