In a significant development, the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) is pushing forth for legislative changes in the way pharmacy benefit managers operate. They have recently submitted a letter on Feb. 20, appealing to Congress for critical action that will overhaul existing practices and introduce transparency in the pharmacy benefits management arena.
The NAAG reportedly spotlighted three crucial bills which they believe can be turning points in this reform. These include the DRUG Act (S1542/HR6283), the Protecting Patients Against PBM Abuses Act (HR2880), and the Lower Costs, More Transparency Act (HR5378). The letter underscores the urgent requirement for legislative intervention to tackle potential exploitations within the pharmacy industry.
The coalition opines that an enhanced federal law can effectively enable state and federal regulators to work in tandem. This united front would bolster their shared responsibility of holding pharmacy benefit managers accountable, and significantly shape the country’s overall health care system.
