First Over-the-Counter US Birth Control, Opill, Priced at $19.99 Monthly

Perrigo Co.’s Opill, the first over-the-counter oral birth control in the United States, is making its mark with a suggested monthly retail price of $19.99. This follows the clearance for nonprescription use by US regulators last summer, making the United States join a list of more than 100 other countries where the pill is available over the counter, no longer necessitating physician appointments or approvals.

Historically, over half of the 6.1 million annual pregnancies in the United States are unplanned, putting an emphasis on the importance of accessible birth control methods. The significance of the pricing comes to light as insurance companies are not mandated to cover over-the-counter drugs. Hence, an affordable price tag is pivotal for widespread accessibility of the product.

Opill will be available for purchase beyond major retailers and pharmacies. Potential users can also opt to purchase the pill from the Opill official website, with the product priced at $49.99 for a three-month supply, and $89.99 for a larger volume.
