Samsung’s $67.5M Patent Infringement Award Nullified Due to Juror Confusion

In a recent development involving tech giant Samsung Electronics Co., a $67.5 million patent infringement award that was to be given to G+ Communications LLC has been nullified. This substantial award was earlier decreed over the alleged usage of unlicensed technology in Samsung’s Galaxy 5G smartphones.

Interestingly, the January verdict wasn’t able to hold water as there seemed to be significant confusion during the jury deliberations. Mainly, the jury lacked clear understanding about the differentiation between running and lump sum royalties. A memorandum opinion and order clearly stated this lack of knowledge could have led to imprecise judgments by the jury.

The order was filed in early March by Judge Rodney Gilstrap, at the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Keeping these considerations in mind, the judge ordered a fresh trial for determining the damages. This development throws the initial $67.5 million jury award out of the equation, leading to further prolongation in the legal battle between Samsung and G+ Communications.

It’s important to note that royalty confusion can jeopardize the legal proceedings and the final verdict, as seemingly occurred in this case. More to follow as the situation continues to unfold. For further information, please refer to the full memorandum opinion and order here.
