ABA Approves Teach-Out Plan for Golden Gate University Law Students

In the last few years, students at Golden Gate University have faced substantial uncertainty regarding their futures at the school. With the decision to halt the J.D. program, the rush to find suitable solutions for already enrolled students became a pressing issue. However, there is now light at the end of the tunnel for these law students thanks to the recent approval from the American Bar Association (ABA) of Golden Gate’s teach-out plan, according to Law.com.

This teach-out plan was the saving grace many students needed. After a deliberate review of the school’s revised plan, the ABA decreed that the Law School’s accreditation will continue until July 1, 2027. However, this extension is granted solely for the purpose of letting the Law School accept credits earned by enrolled students handling transient studies at other ABA-approved law schools. The goal is quite straightforward. Students who meet the graduation requirements of Golden Gate Law School will be awarded their J.D. degree.

There are some important stipulations to bear in mind, though. No new students will be admitted, and beyond the summer of 2024, the school will not offer any credit-bearing courses. But for current students, this decision heralds the possibility of completing their educations at the University of San Francisco School of Law or Mitchell Hamline School of Law. Both these law schools outdo Golden Gate University, ranking 165 and 167 respectively in comparison to Golden Gate’s ranking of 180-196 by the USNWR.

While this marks a positive turn for Golden Gate students, it does not end the challenges entirely for the school. Litigation filed by students and alumni regarding management concerns (Above the Law) still hangs over the institution. However, the school will continue to offer degrees whilst managing these legal affairs.

This recent development in the Golden Gate saga offers a semblance of a smooth ride and paints a satisfying end to this chapter of the Golden Gate story. For more detailed information on the topic, you can view the original article here.
