The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India announced on Thursday the discovery of a suspected nationwide ‘human trafficking’ network with links to Russia. The perpetrators allegedly lured Indian nationals with promises of lucrative jobs in Russia, only to train them for combat and compellingly deploy them in the Russia-Ukraine conflict zone.
A press release from the CBI revealed that the network utilized social media platforms like YouTube and local agents to attract victims with high-paying job opportunities. Instead, it is alleged that these victims were trained for combat roles and placed under bane conditions in the Russia-Ukraine conflict zone. Several victims reportedly sustained severe injuries while in the war zone.
The CBI has initiated a case against various private Visa Consultancy Firms and representatives implicated in the network. The investigation, which entailed simultaneous searches at 13 locations, has uncovered incriminating evidence in the form of cash, documents, and digital records. Over 35 instances of victim trafficking have been confirmed so far, with ongoing investigations striving to identify more victims.
This discovery follows last month’s pronouncement by Indian Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal. In his statement dated February 23, Jaiswal requested Russia for the immediate release of Indian nationals working “support jobs” for the Russian army. He voiced that the Indian Embassy has repeatedly conveyed concerns to the Russian authorities regarding the release of these nationals. He advised Indians to exercise caution and refrain from involvement in the conflict.
Jaiswal further detailed India’s neutral stance on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. During a media briefing on February 8, he underscored the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and humanitarian aid for Ukraine. He articulated India’s support for a peaceful resolution through conversation and encouraged all parties to partake in discussions to advance progress.
