Thomson Reuters Launches AI-Assisted Legal Research Tool CoCounsel Core in the UK

Thomson Reuters is expanding its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered legal research tools with the U.K. introduction of CoCounsel Core, a stand-alone version of the legal assistant that does not require a Westlaw subscription. The technology firm also revealed plans to enhance its Westlaw Edge UK platform with an AI-Assisted Research function, which will roll out in the coming weeks, according to an official press release.

CoCounsel was designed by Casetext, a legal research company that Thomson Reuters acquired for $650 million in August 2023. The integration of the tool into the U.S. market took place in November, and it’s now being deployed more extensively through the Thomson Reuters suite of software solutions.

This AI tool enables users to perform a variety of tasks, ranging from data extraction and document drafting to legal research. This move aligns with the continuing trend of AI adoption within the legal profession, as firms seek to streamline processes and improve efficiency.

At least two firms in the U.K. have already started using Thomson Reuters’ CoCounsel Core, marking the effective utilization of the AI assistant it gained through its 2023 Casetext acquisition.
