Welcome to the digital discussion of modern motherhood in the legal profession. Following our continuous series in partnership with MothersEsquire, we are delighted to welcome back Sarah Feldman Horowitz who shares her personal and professional evolution.
As mothers would agree, the only constant in life is change. The journey through motherhood is a dynamic process where our children’s needs evolve constantly; challenge us; and push us to adapt, innovate and improve.
Similarly, the journey through a law practice also begs for continuous evolution. Sarah started her own legal practice six and a half years ago, fuelled in large part by her parenthood journey. Back then, she was juggling with the needs of her young children, sleepless nights, and physical fitness. Now, with her eldest in middle school and the youngest in preschool, her life feels staggeringly different, punctuated by moments of calm.
Over these years, her law practice has transformed from a fledgling solo venture into a bustling legal hub with a team of supporting staff. Initially driven by the pressure of finding the next client and gathering enough Google reviews, her law firm now stands on a robust foundation of former clients and professional relationships. As the lone attorney, mental investment in each case is crucial, but the volume of work often proves overwhelming.
Just as the decision of setting up her practice was nerve-wracking, Sarah now stands on the precipice of another daunting move – hiring attorneys for her firm. However, she is driven by the hope of a more manageable workload and the opportunity of flexible, part-time roles for other professionals navigating through parenthood. She dreams of a nontraditional law firm structure where lawyers can choose their caseloads and operate remotely.
Half a decade ago, Sarah wrote an article for Above the Law, sharing her insight about the evolution of work-life balance. Today, her message stands stronger than ever: the key is to continually reassess where you stand, and where you need to be, to maintain the optimal work-life equilibrium.
