Nippon Steel Defends $14.1 Billion US Acquisition in Face of Presidential Opposition

In a recent move, Nippon Steel Corp. has reiterated its commitment to seal the $14.1 billion acquisition deal of the United States Steel Corp. This initiative continues despite explicit opposition from President Joe Biden who asserted that the company should remain under US control.

The determined stance of Japan’s largest steelmaker has come in the wake of President Biden’s comments. As part of its bid, the company reiterated an earlier commitment of an additional $1.4 billion in investment. This offer was also accompanied by a pledge of no layoffs or plant shutdowns, based on a recent statement released on Friday.

Interestingly, President Biden stopped before explicitly saying he would block the takeover. However, his comments are a rare instance of presidential interference in a transaction of this kind. In general, such interventions are not characteristic outside of an election year, and often, transactions such as this are not subjected to as much political scrutiny.
