Uber Technologies Inc.’s Chief Legal Officer, D. Anthony “Tony” West, received almost $10.4 million in total compensation last year as the company generated operating profits in three out of the four quarters. The compensation largely consisted of $7 million in stock awards and a roughly estimated $3.3 million in cash, according to a preliminary proxy statement filed on March 15.
Uber stated in the filing that West played a pivotal role in securing an agreement with New York’s attorney general, which has been considered a model by both Uber and Lyft for resolving other labor disputes. This agreement, a $328 million accord, provides its drivers employment “flexibility”.
The ride-sharing giant registered three consecutive quarterly operating profits, including the final quarter of 2023 when it reported gross bookings of $37.6 billion, surpassing analyst estimates. The company revealed an increase in revenue by 15% to $9.94 billion in its most recent quarterly results.
West, a former partner at Morrison & Foerster, has served as Uber’s legal chief and corporate secretary since 2017 after being recruited from PepsiCo Inc.
Last year, the company added nearly two dozen lawyers to its legal ranks after the departures of two top deputies of West, Keir Gumbs and Tammy Albarrán. Albarrán is now the legal chief for Peloton Interactive Inc, while Gumbs was recently appointed as the General Counsel for Jones Financial Cos.
Despite a slight dip from his total compensation of roughly $10.6 million in 2022, West continues to steer Uber’s legal ship amidst numerous legal and regulatory challenges.
