Prominent Lawyer’s Resignation Follows Allegations of Racist, Sexist Misconduct

Washington lawyer Nicholas George, known for his long stint as a criminal defense attorney in Walla Walla, has voluntarily resigned from practice following serious allegations of misconduct. His resignation came as a consequence of a disciplinary investigation pertaining to his professional conduct.

The Office of Disciplinary Counsel of the Washington State Bar Association accused George, 71, of using racist, xenophobic, and sexist language against his clients as well as women in the legal profession.

George’s alleged misconduct involved conflicts of interest with his clients. An instance was reported where George is said to have used a client’s information to her disadvantage after withdrawing as her counsel. The 30-plus-year veteran lawyer was also alleged to have resorted to prejudicial language and derogatory remarks towards a prosecutor, whom he described using a derogatory term.

The details of the disciplinary proceedings have been posted by the Washington State Bar Association, as the public documentation reveals. The findings were alarming enough as to Barnett’s misconduct, that he chose resignation rather than face disciplinary actions.

George’s resignation in lieu of discipline is a serious reminder of the legal profession’s dedication to maintaining decorum, high ethical standards, and the utmost respect for clients. It sends a strong signal to attorneys around the globe, reminding them of the importance of maintaining professional decorum and high ethical standards while practicing law.
