In an effort to boost profit margins, law firms under the Am Law 200 have been increasing their contingency fee practices, a tactic that has yielded significant gains for certain firms in recent years. Firms such as Kirkland & Ellis, Crowell & Moring, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, and Susman Godfrey have been representing plaintiffs on a contingency fee basis, which means they accept certain litigation cases in exchange for a portion of any recovery awarded in a settlement or judgement.
Kirkland, Crowell, Quinn, and Susman Godfrey have all seen financial increments from these contingency fee cases. According to Evan Meyerson of Burford Capital, there has been a marked increase in interest from firms in developing their plaintiff side practices.
