In a recent development reported by Bloomberg, Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) has announced his opposition to the nomination of Adeel Mangi on the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. If confirmed, Mangi would become the first Muslim federal appeals court judge.
Mangi’s nomination has drawn intense opposition from Republicans, complicating the confirmation process. Adding to this, Senator Manchin has stated that he will continue to oppose any judicial nominee that Senate Republicans unanimously vote against and is not being “a roadblock.”
“I don’t think he has any bipartisan support,” Manchin told reporters in reference to Mangi’s prospects. “I’ve just come to the conclusion that I’m not going to continue to go down this path” of confirming judges with lifetime appointments based on party-line votes.
This stance by Manchin further impedes the way for Mangi’s appointment, thereby marking a significant setback for what could potentially have been a historic moment for the federal judiciary. It underscores the ongoing challenges faced by such nominations in an increasingly polarized political environment.
