Mississippi Deputy Sentenced to 40 Years for Brutal Assault of Black Men Amid Broader Police Conduct Debate

A former deputy of Rankin County, Mississippi, Christian Dedmon, was recently sentenced to 40 years in prison. This sentence comes as a part of a series of penalties for law officers who confessed to taking part in the January 2023 assault of two Black men, Michael Jenkins and Eddie Parker. Dedmon is the fourth to be sentenced for such involvement, among six deputies who acknowledged guilt.

The six guilty deputies, including Dedmon and Daniel Opdyke, who was recently sentenced to 17.5 years, reportedly brutalized, tortured and sexually assaulted the two victims over several hours during an unwarranted home invasion. Reports indicate that Jenkins was shot in the mouth as part of a staged execution, and was left to bleed with serious injuries. Allegedly, in the aftermath, they planted drugs and firearms to distort the truth of their actions.

Jenkins characterized Dedmon as the most violent and cruel among the abusers, a label supported by the prosecution during the hearing. Legal teams recounted the sexual attacks Dedmon performed on the victims, describing them as among the most “shocking, brutal and cruel acts imaginable.”

The cases against the involved law officers have sparked a broader debate about police conduct. Malik Shabazz, the victims’ attorney, used the occasion of the sentencing to issue a powerful warning to American police officers. He stated that when law enforcement allows rogue activities and abuses under its watch, it must share the responsibility for such actions with those directly involved.

The victims, in their pursuit of justice, have also filed a civil lawsuit against Rankin County and Sheriff Bryan Bailey.

A previous investigation by The New York Times into the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office unveiled a history of brutality going as far back as 2004. Dedmon’s presence during a past standoff involving a ‘mentally disturbed’ individual has come to light.

The remaining two members of the so-called “Goon Squad” are scheduled to receive their sentences on Thursday.
