In recent news, over a dozen federal judges travelled to Israel to discuss the country’s legal system, military compliance with international law, and the aftermath of the October attack by Hamas. Notably, the majority of these judges are appointees of former President Donald Trump. The discussion, part of a four-day trip this month, was sponsored by the World Jewish Congress.
Among the judges who particpated were Trump-appointed justices like Patrick Bumatay and Lawrence VanDyke of the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, DC Circuit Judge Neomi Rao, and Sixth Circuit Judge Amul Thapar. The group also included judges nominated by former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush.
The group comprised of 14 judges in total, three of whom are trial court judges and eight are appellate court judges, including Trump circuit and trial court members. Besides focusing on reviewing the Israeli legal framework, the trip was partly guided towards understanding and assessing the October 7 attack by Hamas. Meetings with Israeli officials and judges formed an integral part of the itinerary.
