Despite strides in increasing diversity, the makeup of California’s lawyers still fails to represent the state’s demographic makeup accurately, a recent report from the State Bar of California has found. This imbalance remains even though a third of newly admitted attorneys in the state are women of color.
This information is part of the State Bar Diversity Report Card, published recently, which also revealed that the attorney population in California is two-thirds white. These numbers contrast sharply with California’s adult demographic, where only 38% identify as white.
The State Bar of California has been proactively addressing diversity issues within the profession. Since 2023, they began incentivizing firms to incorporate initiatives aimed at improving diversity. These initiatives range from conducting exit interviews to requiring yearly implicit bias training.
However, there remain significant hurdles for people of color in the legal field. The issue is not just getting talented lawyers from diverse backgrounds through the door, but also ensuring their longevity in the profession. The State Bar report also found that lawyers of color are more likely to leave California’s legal field early in their careers.
The implications of these demographic imbalances within the profession are significant, requiring further action and study. A full review of the diversity status and challenges facing California’s legal profession can be found in the Bloomberg Law report.
