Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) has settled nine-year-old felony state charges by agreeing to pay approximately $300,000 in restitution and commit to 100 hours of community service. The charges, dating back to 2015, accused Paxton of soliciting investors for a technology company without revealing that he was being compensated for his endorsement.
The resolution was declared at a Houston courthouse, eliminating the potential prison sentence Paxton might have encountered had he been convicted at the trial scheduled for next month. In a pretrial hearing, prosecutors pronounced that they would dismiss all charges against Paxton if he adheres to the deferred prosecution agreement.
It is important to note, however, that Paxton is still subject to an unrelated federal investigation. This settlement does not impact the federal charges that remain pending.
