A wave of docket activity seeped into the Federal District of New Jersey soon after Judge Zahid N. Quraishi ruled on Friday that the state’s convoluted primary ballot blueprint violated the US Constitution.
The design highlights county-party approved candidates in an easy-to-see left-hand column, while relegating other nominees to more challenging spots to locate on the ballot. This ruling instigated Quraishi to issue an unusual letter on March 30 to elaborate that despite his order’s comprehensive nature, only the exact aspects explicitly addressed in his verdict would influence changes.
This development comes in the wake of GOP primary ballots being exempt from the orders aiming to block ‘the line’ design. In their turn, county Democratic chairpersons have appealed the ruling for pilfering their power. The final resolution remains to be seen and could potentially reshape the political landscape in New Jersey.
