Document management powerhouse, iManage, holds an impressive clientele of 4,000 customers including more than 80% of Am Law 100 and over 40% of Fortune 100 companies, with a geographical reach spanning six continents. The previous year saw this firm increasing its reach by adding more than 300 new clients from the legal and corporate sectors, as mentioned in their recent report.
However, the journey of iManage, branded with the tagline “Making Knowledge Work”, was not without its challenges. With a history dating back 30 years, the firm went through a sequence of acquisitions, resulting in its eventual possession by Autonomy, a company which later came under the ownership of Hewlett Packard following an acquisition in 2011.
This HP-Autonomy acquisition went on to become an infamous fiasco. Hewlett Packard, alleging Autonomy falsely inflated its value, eventually had to write off almost $8.8 billion of the $11.1 billion acquisition cost. This scandal continues to cause shockwaves in the industry, with the founder of Autonomy currently on trial in San Francisco facing criminal fraud charges.
Amid the chaos, iManage, though in no way implicated in the scandal, was bought back by its original founding management team led by Neil Araujo in 2015. Araujo views this move as a chance to reset and apply insights gleaned from the firm’s storied past to build a successful future.
