In a significant turn of events, the Brazilian Supreme Court has mandated X Corp., previously known as Twitter, to eliminate certain users from its platform, as per the announcement by the social media company. The entailing details about the lawsuit or the posts that purportedly breach the law were not disclosed by the court, according to X’s Global Government Affairs account. The company further claimed that it was being threatened with penalties and that the court has forbidden it from revealing the affected accounts.
Furthermore, X Corp. pinpointed that such a verdict infringes the Marco Civil da Internet, along with the Brazilian Federal Constitution. As conveyed in an email released by the company’s legal representative, requests from Brazil’s Congress for divulging of private messages exchanged among its users are being actively contested by the company.
The orders from the Supreme Court were further exacerbated by a group named “Conservative Movement”, who submitted a writ pondering over the disclosure of their private messages. The court consequently suspended the requests, analysing them as breaches of legal prerequisites.
X Corp.’s CEO, Elon Musk, has publicly criticised the court’s decision by labelling it as detrimental to the citizens’ will in Brazil and dubbing it as censorship. The detrimental repercussions of the decision extend on to the company’s financial situation in the country, primarily affecting its revenue, as explained by Musk. In response to the on-going situation, Musk declared the termination of X’s office in the country and vowed to fight against the decision.
Musk further announced that the platform intends to unveil the exact demands of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, pointing out the violations of Brazilian law, whilst vehemently condemning Moraes for his actions against the constitution and citizens of Brazil.
