The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria (EFCC) has filed 26 new charges of corruption and abuse of office against former Nigerian Central Bank Chief Godwin Emefiele. Prominent among the accusations are allegations of fraudulent foreign exchange allocations without requisite supporting bids; the sum total of these in question amounts to $2 billion. Additional charges range from accepting gratification, receiving gifts through intermediaries, and unlawfully obtaining properties, all violations of the country’s Corrupt Practices Act, 2000. Emefiele has categorically denied all these charges.
The onslaught of disparagements faced by Emefiele is not new. Earlier in the year, Emefiele was slammed with another 14 charges in a different court. Assertions from that case included accusations of conspiracy, forgery, and procuring money under false pretenses. Emefiele’s legal team has raised procedural objections to these accusations under Nigeria’s Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
However, these objections have been overruled by a High Court judge, indicating that such concerns should be submitted formally in writing.
The saga with Emefiele started when President Bola Tinubu suspended him on June 9, 2023, attributing the suspension to his believed role in the financial slump of the nation and the ongoing investigations. Post his suspension, Emefiele was held by the Department of State Services until October, even as court orders petitioned for his release. A high court in Nigeria then instructed for his release on the conditions of bail on charges of fraud and corruption, which notably reduced the initial 20 counts of charges alleging a 6.5 billion Naira fraud to a mere six counts totaling 1.6 billion. Once again, Emefiele pleaded not guilty.
The former governor of the Central Bank is expected to present himself in court on the coming Monday in response to the latest 26 charges of corruption and abuses of office.
