Russia Demands Probe into Kamikaze-Style Drone Strike in Moldova’s Transnistria Region

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a call on Saturday for an investigative probe into a drone strike that occurred in Moldova’s self-governing Transnistria region. The ministry has labeled the strike as yet another provocation to the region. TASS reports that the ‘Kamikaze-style’ strike targeted a defense ministry unit based in Transnistria, causing extensive damage to a radar station on Friday.

The targeted facility is located just 6 kilometers away from the Ukrainian border. Following the attack, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, expressed her strong condemnation. She alleged that the assault was aimed at exacerbating an already strained situation in and around Transnistria.

Additionally, Zakharova conveyed Russia’s expectations for a comprehensive inquiry into all aspects of the incident. She declared that Russia trusts “those behind this reckless action” will come to understand the gravity of their actions.

This isn’t the first such incident in the region; less than a month ago, Transnistria was hit by a drone. This earlier strike, on 17th March, resulted in a fire and caused significant damage to regional military property. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Pridnestrovian Moldovian Republic condemned this incident, terming it a terrorist attack. It is important to note that, at the time, Moldova’s Bureau of Reintegration Policy confirmed that Ukraine was not involved in the incident.

The Russian-speaking, breakaway region has been under Russia’s patronage since the 1990s. The authorities in the area are known to have connections with Moscow, largely because the region is home to a sizeable contingent of approximately 1,500 Russian troops.
