As we approach what could be the first criminal trial of former President Donald Trump, anticipation and speculation within the legal world continues to mount. Scheduled for the coming week, the New York trial addresses the hush money allegations that have long been contested.
In the latest development, Trump’s legal team has requested for Judge Juan M. Merchan to recuse himself, a stratagem the legal fraternity perceives as quite a long shot.
Renowned Hogan Lovells partner and previous acting Solicitor General, Neal Katyal, termed the ploy as “nonsense” during an appearance on Jen Psaki’s MSNBC show. Describing Trump’s legal approach as a series of lies, denials, and delays, Katyal predicted that these tactics would eventually lead to Trump’s conviction, marking an unprecedented event in American history.
“His legal strategy is first lie, then deny, then delay. And we’re on the delay phase of this. It’s his last-ditch effort,” Katyal shared during the program. “I strongly suspect Donald Trump will be convicted at the end of that trial. That will be the first former president to be convicted criminally.”
Expressing faith in the efficacy of the American criminal justice system, Katyal proclaimed that despite the baseless legal postulations, he expects the trial to result in a conviction.
“That’s the beauty of the American criminal justice system: It’s 12 jurors, it’s rules of evidence and the like, and these kinds of nonsense arguments will go nowhere,” he further stated.
Besides the New York hush money trial, Katyal was also assertive about a possible conviction in the pending documents case in Florida, as if emphasizing that a series of legal setbacks awaits the former president.
