Late last month, Biglaw firm, Seward & Kissel opened its doors to a rather unconventional type of visitor – therapy dogs. This initiative, not only offers a unique way to mitigate workplace stress, but also underscores the growing awareness for mental health support within the industry. They teamed up with New York Therapy Animals, Inc. to provide relief from work-induced stress in a fun and memorable manner.
Previous criticism questioning the introduction of therapy pets, and puppy yoga as mental health initiatives in law firms has been strong but perhaps opportunities have been missed to understand the substantial role that animals can have in managing stress and contributing positively to the work environment. It’s messenger, not just the message that counts. The provision of pet-assisted therapy signals to all employees that mental health is a valued aspect of the firm’s culture.
Seward & Kissel, has pioneered the concept of ‘office fun’ in the legal industry, demonstrating awareness of the pivotal role that such initiatives can have on employee performance and organisational culture. Their past adventures into non-traditional work activities includes the staging of an in-office miniature golf tournament, as a way of boosting morale and creating a sense of community.
The recent therapy dog initiative hosted in the law firm involved four friendly canine visitors namely; Ziggy the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Louie the Chocolate Lab, Disco the Mini Poodle, and Melodie the Toy Poodle. Partner and culture committee head at Seward & Kissel, Steve Nadel believes that establishing such a supportive and rewarding environment, paves the way for memorable moments enriching the workplace experience.
Certainly, it has been acknowledged those memorable moments, like impromptu games or navigating through mishaps together, often ignite stronger bonds among teams. Initiatives like therapy dog visits not only serve as stress relievers, but also as shared experiences that contribute towards a warmer, collaborative and high-spirited community culture. As the law industry grapples with work-life balance and employee retention issues, firms that understand and act on this stand to gain far greater loyalty and engagement from their workforce.
