Belgium’s Prime Minister, Alexander de Croo, announced at a recent press conference that Belgium has initiated an investigation into alleged Russian interference in the upcoming EU parliamentary elections. The announcement followed revelations from Czech intelligence regarding instances of pro-Russian activity in the EU, including alleged attempts to infiltrate European Parliament.
The PM further detailed how the alleged interference involved a spectrum of espionage networks, including instances of Moscow approaching European Parliament members, potentially incentivizing them to advance a pro-Russian agenda in Europe. This activity, de Croo noted, was aimed at accentuating pro-Russian narratives while facilitating the election of more pro-Russian candidates.
EU countries have found themselves increasingly at loggerheads with Russia due to the unanimous support of Ukraine following Russia’s invasion in 2022. De Croo underscored the need for an uncompromising approach to foreign interference in EU nations, advocating for intervention at both the national and EU level.
Citing Belgium’s distinctive position as the host to multiple EU institutions and holding the currentpresidency of the Council of the EU, de Croo emphasized Belgium’s responsibility in sustaining the democratic rights of every citizen, including the right to a fair vote.
De Croo also confirmed that any alleged Russian interference in EU elections would be prosecuted by Belgian authorities. While actual cash payments might not have taken place on Belgian soil, interfering activities have likely occurred.
At the EU level, de Croo underlined the need for innovative tools to counteract Russian propaganda and misinformation. He suggested revisiting the mandates of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office and the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF). If these mandates prove insufficient against the kind of threats posed, de Croo advocated broadening them to equip authorities with more effective tools against activities that threaten European democracy.
Lastly, de Croo appealed for constant vigilance ahead of the upcoming elections and future European elections, asserting that Belgium is fully committed to cooperating with European countries to fortify and enhance the European Union. European elections are slated for June 6, 2024, marking the election of new members of the European Parliament for the next five years.
