Indian Forces Eliminate 29 Naxals in Bastar: Major Crackdown in Left-Wing Extremism Affected Region

Indian security forces have reportedly killed at least 29 left-wing extremists, known as Naxals or Maoists, in the sensitive Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, a state affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE). Other Indian states including Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Kerala are considered LWE-affected to varying extents.

The operation mounted by the Border Security Force (BSF) and District Reserve Guard (DRG) saw the extremists killed in Kanker, another region of Bastar, following intelligence from the BSF. One BSF personnel member was also injured. The BSF disclosed details of the operation on their official account, describing the operation as a major crackdown and signaling the success in seizing weapons and ammunition from the rebels.

Home Minister Amit Shah commended the security forces for their operation and wished a rapid recovery for the injured officers. He emphasized the threat Naxalism poses to India’s development, peace, and future, and voiced the government’s commitment to eradicate this menace under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Originating in the late 1960s with the aim of challenging social and economic disparities, the Maoist insurgency in India has led to numerous conflicts resulting in significant fatalities. The government’s response has involved both military and development measures, but significant challenges remain. Human rights concerns have been raised, with an identified need to address the root causes rooted in the socioeconomic issues in the affected regions. Furthermore, condemnation of the rebels’ human rights violations has been echoed by global organizations such as Human Rights Watch.

In 2006, the Indian government established the Left Wing Extremism Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs with the goal of addressing left-wing extremist insurgency in a comprehensive manner. This involves the implementation of security-related programs to fortify states grappling with LWE. The division closely monitors the situation, the countermeasures implemented, as well as the successful implementation of development initiatives in these states.
