A Yale University economist, Fiona Scott Morton, who previously withdrew her nomination to become the EU’s chief competition economist, has expressed severe criticism of Apple’s compliance with the new EU antitrust rules, and the European Commission’s enforcement of them. The new set of rules, known as the Digital Markets Act (DMA), has, according to Morton, been effectively rejected by companies such as Apple and Google. Speaking at an antitrust conference organized by the University of Chicago, Morton stated, “The first month of the DMA has seen Apple and Google basically saying ‘no,’ The first response…has been, ‘we refuse to comply.’ ”
If companies like Apple continue in their refusal to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act and remain free of any consequences, the new antitrust law will prove ineffective in curbing Big Tech’s anticompetitive behavior, as suggested by Morton.
