McGuireWoods Ups the Ante with New Bonus Policy for High-Billing Associates

Biglaw firms are known for their generous compensation, often coming in the form of bonuses. The latest firm to make notable adjustments to its bonus policy is McGuireWoods, a notable player that secured gross revenue of $1,020,023,000 in 2023, ranking it 52nd on the Am Law 100 list. In an attempt to reward its highest-performing associates, McGuireWoods has issued a new bonus policy deemed to be more advantageous than those of prior years.

While the new policy will not come into effect until next year, the outlines set in place certainly suggest an attempt to motivate associates to increase their billable hours. This change could significantly boost bonus figures for those associates who can meet, or surpass, the firm’s high billing expectations.

McGuireWoods has outlined their new bonus tiers, which significantly deviate from standard market bonuses that typically range from $15,000 to $115,000 for first-year through seventh-year associates. The firm’s scale for 1,950 hours does not meet market expectations, while its 2,050-hour scale comes close to matching it for the first through third years. The bonuses increase noticeably for those who cross the 2150-hour threshold, surpassing market expectations for all class years.

This new policy highlights a clear expectation – to secure a significant bonus at McGuireWoods, associates must meet rigorous billable hours targets. Time will tell whether this approach will positively affect productivity and job satisfaction, or exacerbate the already intense pressure and workload in competitive law environments.
