The India Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched a case last Thursday, in relation to allegations of land grabs and sexual assaults potentially implicating five influential individuals based in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. This move was in response to an official’s statement reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI). The CBI’s investigation follows an earlier court investigation of the matter that was ordered by the Calcutta High Court back on April 10.
The proceedings revolve around a land dispute with claims saying that women from the victim’s family were subjected to sexual assaults allegedly carried out by prominent individuals in the region. However, the identities of the victims and those charged with these alleged crimes remain confidential, as stated by the CBI reports.
In line with the mandates set out by the High Court, the CBI crafted an innovative email platform to allow the submission of complaints matching the ones reported in Sandeshkhali. This step led to a significant number of entries. Consequently, a specialized team was deputed to Sandeshkhali to carefully examine the claims and initiate cases where there was clear initial evidence of misconduct.
After initial evaluations, the CBI recovered a substantial amount of weapons and ammunition last Friday. The court instructed the CBI to prepare a comprehensive report about the alleged illicit land conversion. The report, which is expected to include an in-depth analysis of revenue records and physical land checks, is set for presentation at the next hearing scheduled for May 2.
Prior to this, on April 13, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) published a spot enquiry report revealing several human rights issues. This inquiry showed instances of assault, threats, sexual abuse and land grabbing perpetrated against victims and villagers in Sandeshkhali. As a result of these alleged human rights violations presented, notices were issued by the NHRC to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of West Bengal, requisitioning detailed reports of the violent episodes and corresponding actions taken by the authorities. The NHRC also demanded information about the compensation granted to the victims and the ameliorating measures the authorities have enacted to restore faith within the local community.
