But an unusual litigation is making headlines, as law associates from prestigious firms Akin Gump and Winson & Strawn are embroiled in a personal legal dispute. The object of this litigation is not a corporate asset or a real-estate property, but a mini poodle named Raven.
An associate at Akin Gump, Taylor Leighton has filed a lawsuit in New York State Court against his former partner, Winson & Strawn litigation associate Nathan Greess, over the custody of their mini poodle, Raven.
In the lawsuit, Leighton passionately details his love for the dog. He refers to Raven as his ‘child’ and outlines an extravagant first birthday party that he planned for her. However, he also accuses Greess of ‘dognapping’ Raven and using her as a tool to inflict emotional distress onto Leighton.
Consequently, Leighton is seeking $200,000 in damages for both intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. Additionally, he demands $7,791 for the purchase and care of Raven, and coverage of his attorney’s fees.
On the other hand, attorney Emily Pollock, on behalf of Greess, spoke to The Daily Beast, stating that they contest the allegations. Pollock stated that Greess disputes the ownership rights claimed by Leighton and, if necessary, will contest Leighton’s claims in court.
This legal tug-of-war over the custody of a mini poodle illuminates not only the deep personal connections people often form with their pets but also the extents to which they will go to ensure their well-being.
