Palestinian Civil Defense Calls for Probe into Mass Graves at Gaza Hospitals

Members of the Palestinian Civil Defense, an emergency response group in Palestine, have called for an independent investigation into mass graves located at Gaza’s Nasser and al-Shifa hospitals. The request made in a recent press conference also included calls for a cease to the ongoing battle and an intensification of humanitarian aid efforts.

These officials claim to have found approximately 400 bodies in mass graves at the specified hospital complexes, two of the most prominent healthcare institutions in Gaza where Israeli military operations took place earlier this year. They stated that due to conditions of decomposition and mutilation, over half of the bodies could not be identified. Disturbingly, among the bodies found, 78 were children, and 10 were found with their hands bound.

The UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed horror at the reports of the mass graves and echoed the call for independent investigation. He highlighted the special protections offered to hospitals under international humanitarian law.

One of Israel’s closest allies, the US, also expressed their concerns about the grave claims. State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel claimed that the reports were “incredibly troubling” and promised to raise the subject with the Israeli government.

The allegations of mass graves come as Israel intensifies its military operations in southern Gaza, forecasting a potential invasion of Rafah where nearly half of Gaza’s population currently seeks shelter. Further afield, the international community has expressed its concerns around this potential invasion, warning that it could further worsen an already dire humanitarian crisis.

Crucially, the plea for an investigation coincides with ongoing ceasefire talks, mediated by the US, Egypt, and Qatar. The outcome of these discussions could potentially change the fate of this conflict-stricken region.
