The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General recently called upon Haitian authorities to promptly execute the transitional governance arrangements after the creation of a Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) and Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s official resignation. This call is in direct response to the escalating gang violence in Haiti and the ensuing humanitarian crisis, now categorised as an emergency by the UN.
The fundamental duty of the TPC is to nominate a new Haitian prime minister and ministerial cabinet after Henry’s resignation; a move designed to alleviate severe gang violence. Gangs leveraged Henry’s departure to mount systematic attacks on several targets, including police stations, prisons, airports, and seaports, as reported by the UN.
In a briefing to the UN Security Council, María Isabel Salvador, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Haiti, made an urgent plea for action, stressing the alarming rise in gang violence.
“In early March, gangs mounted coordinated attacks targeting key state infrastructure, including multiple police stations and two of the main prisons in Port-au-Prince, as well as educational and health facilities and religious sites […]
Sadly, Salvador highlighted the crisis’s devastating impact on children with limited access to essential services and worsening food insecurity. The lack of education access has resulted in an increase in gang recruitment amongst the youth, exposing them to violence, murders, and various criminal activities.
The TPC intends to prevent a political vacuum in the transition period between Henry’s resignation and the appointment of a new cabinet and prime minister. Its tenure cannot be extended past February 7, 2026, the date set for the swearing-in of the new government. Interim Prime Minister Michel Patrick Boisvert, formerly the Finance Minister, has currently taken up post-production as per reports.
The TPC faces threats from local gangs, with one notorious gang leader “Barbeque” Jimmy Cherizier warning the TPC as claimed by Reuters. TPC member, Fritz Alphonse Jean, remains resilient, evident in a post on social media citing their continuous fight for the transformation of their nation.
As the situation unfolds, we can only hope for a swift resolution to the political uncertainty in Haiti. The country and its people are at a crucial juncture where quick and decisive action is quintessential to reclaiming peace, stability, and the rule of law.
