The Moscow City Court has detained Dzhumakhon Kurbonov, a Tajikistan national, in relation to the recent Crocus City Hall attack in Moscow, which resulted in the deaths of 144 people. The detention decision was announced on the court’s Telegram page.
The arrest, facilitated by the Basmanny District Court of Moscow, is part of an ongoing, preliminary investigation into the horrific ordeal. Kurbonov is suspected of playing a significant role in the planning stages, notably by financing the operation and providing communication means on an ongoing basis for other members of the organized group responsible for the attack.
The charges against Kurbonov refer to paragraph 3.b of Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, a significant law concerned with the provision of assistance to terrorists.
The attack, conducted by the extremist group ISIS, is the most devastating of its kind witnessed in Russia over the last 20 years, and occurred shortly after President Vladimir Putin entered his third decade of leadership. The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) swiftly responded, initially arresting 12 people and subsequently detaining 3 more individuals in the early days of April. The charges range from recruitment of accomplices, funding of operations, to direct purchasing of firearms and vehicles for the attack.
In light of these horrific events, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation demanded extradition of all individuals related to this act of terrorism and similar incidents, like the October 2022 bombing of the Crimean Bridge, from Ukraine. This was following an investigation by Russian authorities that purported a connection between these incidents and Ukraine. Yet, such claims were refuted by Ukraine as merely attempts to stir anti-Ukrainian sentiment amongst Russians.
As a preventative measure, the court has decreed Kurbonov’s detainment for the duration of 26 days, until May 22nd.
