Australia-based mining behemoth BHP and its Brazilian partner Vale have proposed a settlement amounting to $26 billion to address claims made by Brazil pertaining to the fatal mining disaster in 2015, a catastrophe which claimed 19 lives and resulted in extensive environmental degradation.

This settlement offer materialized following the cessation of negotiation proceedings in December 2023. The legal entities involved in these talks included Mattos Filho representing BHP, Sergio Bermudes Advogados advocating for Vale, and Machado Meyer Sendacz e Opice Advogados upholding the interests of Samarco.
Despite this substantial settlement offer, BHP and Vale could still potentially be liable for claims made by those victimized by the disaster in London. These claims would persist even if a settlement with Brazilian authorities is achieved, as indicated by the plaintiffs firm Pogust Goodhead.
