Spanish PM Sánchez Stays in Office Amid Wife’s Corruption Allegations

The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, recently declared he will remain in office despite the corruption allegations levelled against his wife. The PM’s wife, Begoña Gomez, stands accused of improperly using her position to subtly manipulate business transactions.

Sánchez stated that following a five-day period of contemplation, he has decided to continue his service. He reaffirmed his commitment to working towards democratic regeneration, the expansion of rights and liberties, and pledged to persist in office in defiance of supporters who sought to topple him by employing personal assaults, misinformation, and untruths.

In a letter shared on X (formerly Twitter), Sánchez stated his need for time to reflect on his standing as Prime Minister in light of the allegations. Meanwhile, masses of protesters congregated in Madrid to stand in solidarity with him. The open letter was followed by the initiation of a preliminary investigation by a Madrid court into the corruption allegations concerning his wife.

The proceedings commenced following a complaint lodged by Spanish activist group Manos Limpias against Begoña Gomez. Through a press statement, Bernard Remon, General Secretary of the group, criticized Sánchez’s conduct as wholly inappropriate and refuted claims labeling the organization as far-right.

Serving as Spain’s PM since 2018, 52-year-old Sánchez established a coalition government in November 2023 after his party, Spain’s Socialist Party (PSOE), fell short of a majority in the July elections. Given the upcoming election in the Catalonia region in May and the European Parliament election in June, the allegations against his wife may significantly impact his political stature.
