Elon Musk’s Lawyer Faces Texas Judge Over Unlicensed Practice Allegations

A Texas judge has gestured to lawyer Alex Spiro of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP, the legal defense for Elon Musk, to present himself in the courthouse to answer to charges of practicing without relevant permissions. This allegation arose due to claims that Spiro had defended Musk in a defamation case without proper authority from the court.

Spiro isn’t formally ordered to appear at the May 7 hearing, but Judge Maria Cantú Hexsel of Texas’s 53rd Civil District Court in Travis County suggested, “I don’t think it’s a bad idea for him to come.” This observation was communicated to Spiro’s associates on Wednesday.

The court is to weigh whether Spiro should be restrained from participating in the defamation case initiated by an individual purporting Musk falsely associated him with illegal activities.

It remains to be seen whether Spiro will heed the judge’s unofficial invitation to justify himself or if he will remain absent, offering a written response only as is typical in such situations.
