The allocation of security resources for the judiciary is under strain due to budget cuts and rising threats, as reported by Bloomberg Law. Law enforcement officials, such as those stationed outside Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home, face escalating challenges as they endeavour to maintain appropriate levels of protection.
According to the article, the U.S. Marshals Service, which is responsible for protecting federal judges and courthouses, experienced a budget reduction of $13 million this fiscal year. The agency’s budget, initially standing at around $1.7 billion for salaries and expenses, saw significant depletion. Moreover, the court security budget, which finances the wages of courthouse guards in collaboration with marshals, remained stagnant compared to the last fiscal year. However, given the economic inflation rates, this is an effective cut nonetheless.
This financial strain occurs against a backdrop of an increase in perceived threats to the judiciary and the requirement for round-the-clock security for Supreme Court judges. Therefore, the cuts, which were enacted in March and continues through to the end of this financial year, are particularly concerning.
It remains to be seen how these budgetary constraints will affect the judiciary’s safety. However, there is little doubt that these challenges will place additional pressure on an already stressed Marshals Service and, to a broader extent, on the security of the entire federal judiciary system.
