John Eastman, a lawyer previously affiliated with Donald Trump, has been provisionally suspended from practicing law in the District of Columbia. This action follows a similar injunction delivered by a judge in California.
The District of Columbia suspension is an interim measure maintained until a final decision is made in the Californian proceedings, as outlined by Chief Judge Anna Blackburne-Rigsby of the DC Court of Appeals.
In California earlier this year, State Bar Court Judge Yvette Roland suggested Eastman should be disbarred. This recommendation was rooted in Eastman’s dissemination of fallacious claims about Trump winning the 2020 presidential election.
Eastman’s endeavor to lift his suspension in California was denied by Judge Roland on May 1st, with Roland noting that Eastman’s disbarment would function to “safeguard the public.” The ultimate adjudication on this issue now rests with the California Supreme Court. Several attorneys who previously worked for Trump have faced comparable punitive measures. For instance, licenses of both Rudolph Giuliani and Kenneth Chesebro have been suspended.
