The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has ordered approximately 100,000 Palestinians to evacuate parts of Rafah as it prepares for impending military operations following the suspension of ceasefire negotiations by Hamas. This significant evacuation order applies to multiple neighborhoods and the IDF has warned against any association with Hamas.
Following the issuance of evacuation orders, residents in Rafah started reporting Israeli strikes in the area. A rocket attack on Kerem Shalom, for which Hamas claimed responsibility, resulted in four IDF fatalities and ten injuries.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) criticized the evacuation order, committing to continue delivering essential assistance in Rafah. Similarly, the Norwegian Refugee Council denounced the decision, arguing that a significant number of people have nowhere to go, resulting in prolonged displacement and possible death.
Despite international disapproval of an invasion of Rafah, Israel has been intensifying its military operations. The international community has expressed concern because an invasion could exacerbate an already devastating humanitarian crisis.
Hamas and Israel blame each other for the failure of ceasefire and hostage release negotiations. Amidst the heated negotiations and accusations, Gaza has faced extensive damage over the course of the war, including the loss of half of its buildings, displacement of nearly two million people, and death of more than 34,000 individuals.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered Israel to ensure preventative measures of a “plausible” genocide in Gaza. As warfare continues, Israel’s intention of invading Rafah remains firm and undeterred.
