Prominent Lawyers’ Inflammatory Role in January 6 Insurrection Causes Alarm

In a recently held American Bar Association event, retired federal appellate judge J. Michael Luttig expressed his view that lawyers, some among the nation’s finest, played an “inflammatory role” in the events of January 6. He specifically pointed out that these legal professionals were instrumental in enabling efforts that led to the day’s tragic consequences. Luttig pondered, “I doubt that January 6 would have ever occurred had it not been for the enabling of that effort by lawyers of the legal profession, and they were some of the finest lawyers and constitutional lawyers in the country. So where did they go wrong?”

In his argument, the former Fourth Circuit judge outlined his concerns regarding how these lawyers attempted to use technical law to facilitate the former president’s attempts to overturn an election result that was fair and square. Luttig didn’t mince words when he described this behavior as “indefensible and inexcusable”.

While every profession has its black sheep, it’s important for such instances to serve as reminders for professionals across all fields, including law, to uphold ethical standards and stay true to their oaths not just in words, but in their every action. To find out more, click here.
