In recent legal news, a Singapore law firm is reported to have paid a sizeable ransom following a cyber attack. Shook Lin & Bok, a prominent law firm in Singapore, has allegedly paid $1.3 million in Bitcoin after falling victim to a ransomware attack in April.
The incident was discovered on April 9 and local law enforcement authorities are currently conducting ongoing investigations.
Details surrounding the incident were revealed by SuspectFile, a ransomware incident platform. According to their report, the cyber attack was apparently executed by the Akira ransomware group. The law firm is believed to have paid a total of 21.07 Bitcoins, distributed over three separate transactions, to the cyber criminals. At the time of payment, the sum totalled approximately $1.3 million.
Interestingly, this recent event is akin to a similar attack conducted on the Singapore Law Society’s private network system in May of the preceding year. Such incidents underscore the escalating threats law firms face in a digitally dependant landscape, raising important issues of data security and protection.
