Unions of student workers from various universities, currently in turmoil due to campus protests related to the Israel-Hamas conflict, have begun to file unfair labor practice charges over the responses of these educational institutes. This comes in reaction to administration either ordering or permitting the arrests of thousands of student protestors and others over the past two weeks.
Students filling a range of roles across campuses, including as teaching and research assistants, are demanding accountability for what they allege is an unlawful repression of their right to gather and organize under the National Labor Relations Act.
These charges have been filed in the wake of pro-Palestinian encampments appearing on a minimum of 100 college campuses across the nation. The graduate student unions argue that the protests fall under the protection of labor law, though they must establish a clear link between the protests and their working conditions.
