TikTok is valiantly battling a new United States law, the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which was recently approved and could potentially result in the app’s shutdown across America. According to the law, ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company based in China, is required to sell the social media application within 270 days or prepare to face a country-wide ban in the US. On Tuesday, TikTok appealed to a federal circuit court to consider the law unconstitutional.
The company pointed out that if the statute is preserved, it would grant the government the power to determine that a company is unfit to own and put out the innovative and unique speech platform that it has built. According to the National Law Journal, TikTok’s complaint eloquently detailed the potential implications of upholding the statute. Critics argue that the enforcement of such a law could undermine entrepreneurship and stall technological innovation in the United States.
