In 2017, CMS enacted what was then the largest law firm merger in UK history, combining CMS Cameron McKenna with Olswang and Nabarro. While this put CMS at the forefront of major law firms, the firm has not been shy about its goals for expansion, particularly in relation to the US market.
In 2018, managing partner Stephen Millar outlined the importance of a US presence for CMS, noting how it would significantly alter the firm’s positioning. He highlighted New York, Silicon Valley, and Houston as focal points given the firm’s strengths in financial services, technology, and energy sectors.
Now, under the leadership of Charles Currier, who assumed his position late last year, CMS is looking with interest at the merger between Allen & Overy and Shearman & Sterling. Currier indicates that the firm now has a “good sense” of the US market, a clear sign of the firm’s ongoing ambition in this area.
