Charles Currier, the senior partner of CMS, a colossal presence in Biglaw with more than 5,800 lawyers spread across 80+ offices in over 40 countries, has expressed the firm’s ambitions to become one of a handful of truly globally operating law firms. In comments given to Law.com International, Currier revealed his vision for the organization’s future expansion, particularly emphasizing the necessity of a U.S. presence to fulfil their global potential. The recent merger activity in the Biglaw landscape, including the A&O Shearman deal, has prompted CMS to consider finding a merger partner in the U.S., further expanding its global reach.
“I would like CMS to be one of what I think will be a small number of truly global firms,” stated Currier. Despite the numerous international law firms and those asserting to be global, most are rooted in major financial centres. According to Currier, CMS distinguishes itself with a broader geographic and practice coverage. However, to actualize their global aspirations, a presence in the U.S. is essential.
CMS has taken a meticulous approach in seeking potential merger partners, prioritizing cultural alignment essential to the success of any partnership. As Currier stresses, it is preferable for the company to take its time and find the right fit, rather than rush into any deals, particularly in response to market trends. While the firm has no immediate merger plans, CMS has previously held discussions with several U.S. firms. The recent A&O Shearman combination might be the spark that inspires this international Biglaw titan to explore a relationship with a U.S. company.
