Law Society, the professional association for solicitors in England and Wales, has urged the government to reconsider the burdens placed on law firms by the sanctions regime established in the U.K. in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
These sanctions have resulted in considerable challenges for law firms. Following these sanctions, law firms are required to navigate a complex web of legal obligations, raising concerns about their ability to effectively serve their clients while complying with the new regulatory landscape. In particular, concerns have been raised about the capacity of smaller firms to effectively manage these new obligations without the resources available to their larger counterparts.
In response to these challenges, Law Society has called for a re-evaluation of the obligations placed on law firms. It suggests that the government should reassess its approach to ensure that sanctions meet their intended goal of penalising transgressors without unduly burdening those responsible for their implementation.
While it is yet to be seen whether the government will take action in light of these concerns, the call from Law Society signals a desire within the profession for greater support and clearer guidance to navigate these challenging times.
