The UN General Assembly passed a draft resolution in an emergency special session on Friday, which affirmed Palestine’s eligibility for full UN membership and advised the Security Council to view it favorably. The resolution, which harvested substantial support, also implored the Security Council to revisit its previous decisions regarding Palestine’s membership status.
The General Assembly vote saw 143 countries advocating for the Security Council to reconsider Palestine’s application for full membership, with 9 nations opposing and 25 refraining from the vote. Notwithstanding the robust international backing, Palestine’s accession into the UN remains uncertain, primarily due to a previous veto by the US in the Security Council on April 18.
Furthermore, the General Assembly authorized Palestine with enhanced rights to participate in its sessions, indicating a positive evolution towards acknowledging and supporting Palestine’s sovereignty on an international platform.
Reacting to the vote, Israel’s UN ambassador, Gilad Erdan, shredded a copy of the UN Charter, claiming it was “being trampled on and thrown out the window”, branding the resolution as “destructive” and labelling the Palestinians as “the exact opposite of peace-loving”.
Noteworthy enhancements to Palestine’s status are slated to take effect when the 79th session of the assembly commences in September 2024. These encompass a series of key shifts, such as the privilege to make statements, propose and co-sponsor amendments, request agenda items in UN sessions, and being seated alphabetically among member states. These modifications will notably boost Palestine’s participation capabilities within the UN framework.
This decision has rekindled debate on the efficiency of the existing UN system wherein a single country’s veto can overrule the collective decision of the international community. Proponents for reform contend that this system needs reassessment to better mirror the democratic principles the UN embodies.
The vote transpired shortly before IDF Spokesperson Avichay Adraee ordered civilians to evacuate from the eastern part of Rafah to an “expanded humanitarian area in Al-Mawasi”. Rafah currently hosts 1.5 million displaced individuals. A second evacuation order was issued in Northern Gaza stating, “You are in a dangerous combat zone.” This coincides with a report released by the US last night stating that it was “reasonable to surmise” that American arms supplied to Israelis had been utilized inconsistently with human rights law or harm mitigation practices.
