Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico is currently in critical condition after being shot multiple times. A statement about his condition was released on his
official Facebook page. Fico’s future is uncertain as we are told that ‘the next few hours will be decisive.’
Local reports have confirmed that the suspected shooter, Juraj Čintula, was promptly arrested following the attack. Čintula, a 71-year-old man, is a reputed writer and a supporter of the Slovakian opposition party, Progressive Slovakia.
Condemnations of the attack have been swift and decisive. Ursula Vvon der Leyen, President of the European Commission,
expressed on Twitter, ‘I strongly condemn the vile attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico. Such acts of violence have no place in our society and undermine democracy, our most precious common good. My thoughts are with PM Fico and his family.’
Similarly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded with deep concern, stating, ‘The attack on Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico is appalling. We strongly condemn this act of violence against our neighboring partner state’s head of government. Every effort should be made to ensure that violence does not become the norm in any country, form, or sphere. We sincerely hope Robert Fico recovers soon and express our solidarity with the people of Slovakia.’
This is a developing story, and we will continue to provide updates as they become available.
