California Bar Delays Vote on Severing Ties with NCBE for Independent Examination

The State Bar of California Board of Trustees recently announced a postponement in the decision regarding its relationship with the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). Previously on their meeting agenda, the board planned to discuss potentially severing ties with the NCBE, a move that would enable the creation of a distinct Multistate Bar Examination within California.

This alteration not only would dissolve an existing relationship but also would lead to a significant financial commitment. The proposition on the table was for the State Bar to enter into a five-year contract with Kaplan North America LLC. Valued at a maximum of $1.475 million annually, this partnership would be established for the development and operation of California’s independent bar exam. This exam would serve in replacement of either the MBE or the NextGen exam, whichever is currently operational.

Given the significance of this decision and its far-reaching implications, the board deemed it critical to have additional time for consideration. It was thus decided to remove this matter from the immediate agenda, deferring the vote on whether to proceed with this change.
