ByteDance, the proprietor of the globally-famed app TikTok, may soon be forced to sell as the United States has recently passed a contentious ‘divest or ban’ law Above the Law. Various legal challenges to the law are currently underway.
Billionaire Frank McCourt, former Los Angeles Dodgers owner, is now marshaling an effort to purchase the Gen Z’s favorite social media platform. McCourt’s attempt is being supported by the financial advisory services of Guggenheim Securities and legal expertise of Kirkland & Ellis Project Liberty.
An opponent of big tech, McCourt founded Project Liberty, an initiative aimed at giving people back control over their digital lives. He believes the potential acquisition of TikTok aligns with this mission, offering a platform for an alternative tech model Project Liberty.
In McCourt’s words:
“By bringing leaders in academics, technology, behavioral science, psychology, and economics together with community partners, parents, and citizens, we believe we can preserve — and enhance — the TikTok experience by giving individuals and creators on the platform the value and control they deserve concerning who has access to their data and how it is used.”
This prospect is likely to be heartening for TikTok users around the globe. The potential deal could represent a significant step towards a more inclusive and user-controlled internet experience.
